What are the EDD – European Development Days?

The European Development Days (EDD) is Europe’s leading forum on international cooperation and development. Organized by the European Commission, the European Development Days (EDD) brings the development community together each year to share ideas and experiences in ways that inspire new partnerships and innovative solutions to the world’s most pressing challenges.

When will the EDD – European Development Days be?

The European Development Days usually take place in June every year and in 2020, the EDD 2020 will take place on 9-10 June 2020 at Tour & Taxis in Brussels, Belgium.

What is the theme for the EDD – European Development Days 2020?

For its fourteenth edition, the EDD will be built around “The Green Deal for a Sustainable Future”. The interdependence of humans and nature lies at the core of sustainable development. Biodiversity and resilient ecosystems are crucial for human well-being, as they support livelihoods, enhance food and nutrition security, enable access to water and health, and contribute significantly to climate change mitigation and adaptation. Therefore, activities aimed at ensuring a sustainable green transition and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals are crucial for maintaining and improving the health of our planet, while at the same time contributing to socio-economic development.


The EDD 2020 agenda will be framed by two major themes emerging as key priorities in today’s current context: A Green Economy for Nature and People and Protecting Biodiversity and People.

How many people attend the EDD – European Development Days?

Since its launch in 2006, each year, the forum attracts more than 8,000 participants from over 140 countries, representing 1200 organizations from the development community.

What is the EDD – Young Leaders Programme?

The EDD – Young Leaders Programme gives a platform to selected Young Leaders from around the world to represent other youths by speaking alongside global leaders on themed development topics.

Who can apply for the EDD Young Leaders Programme?

It is important that the Young Leaders invited to come and speak at EDD represent other youth, and don’t only speak in their name only. We are looking for candidates who have proven leadership in projects, organizations, and initiatives and who are able to represent other youth at the forum.

What are the requirements to apply for the EDD Young Leaders Programme?

The European Commission is looking for extraordinary young people aged 21-26 who can represent the powerful impact that youth are having in the development field.

As a Young Leader, what will my participation be at the EDD 2020?

The Young Leaders Programme will consist of a 10-day visit to Brussels, where Young Leaders will meet EU experts and stakeholders and play a leading role in the EDD Programme, which will include speaking in various sessions alongside global leaders. The selected Young Leaders will have a place to speak at the highest-level debates at EDD 2020, alongside VIPs and key decision-makers. EDD Young leaders are encouraged to participate in other sessions, including debate sessions or brainstorming, where they will be given more space to express their opinions and share their experiences.

Will the European Commission cover all expenses for the selected EDD – Young Leaders?

Yes. All expenses will be covered by the European Commission.

Do I have to speak English?

Young Leaders are expected to have a minimum level of upper-intermediate English (Level B2 in the “Common European Framework of References for Languages”). Young Leaders might be asked to prove their level of English in a Skype conversation with the EDD Youth Team.
